The culture of the Philippines is one of the most unique and diverse among the nations in Southeast Asia. It is marked by a true blend of East and West. The original ethnic background of the people is Indonesian and Malay although the earliest migration was Austronesian in origin. Spanish influence is significant because of Spanish colonial rule that lasted four centuries. Due to migration and other historical occurrences, there are strong Chinese elements as well. Later American rule and contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of East and West, both in the appearance and culture of the Filipinos.
